Welcome to the latest edition of the Creek Road Pottery newsletter, where I share the trials, triumphs, and lessons learned from life in the studio. The second half of January has been a time of challenges, resilience, and connections, all woven into the rhythm of creating pottery that matters for people who care.
Overcoming Resistance in the Studio
January has been a battle against resistance, from icy temperatures to moments of doubt. The cold snap brought new challenges, with frozen kilns and stiff clay making the simple act of creating more difficult. Resistance is always present in the studio, and some days it winsโbut the key is to show up again the next day.
These moments of struggle have taught me about preparation and the importance of persistence. Every time I step into the studio, even if itโs just to troubleshoot or organize, Iโm reminded that small efforts build toward bigger achievements. Resistance may slow us down, but it canโt stop the creative process if we keep showing up.

“Peopleing” at the Wine Fest
The local wine festival was a highlight of the month, providing a chance to connect with the community and share the joy of handmade pottery. Despite the snowy roads and freezing temperatures, the event was filled with warmth and camaraderie. Sharing a table with my friend Jill, who brought her handmade soaps and maple syrup, added to the experience.
One of the most rewarding moments was meeting an art student and sharing stories about our work. I even gave her a tumbler to inspire her own creative journey. These interactions remind me why I create: to connect, inspire, and bring a bit of joy to others. โPeopleingโ is about building community, one conversation and one creation at a time.
Resilience Through the Cold
The harsh winter weather tested the limits of patience and creativity. Frozen kiln lids and clogged burners presented challenges, but they also offered opportunities to problem-solve and adapt. Memories of past struggles with older kilns served as a reminder of how far Iโve come and the resilience that comes with experience.
Working through these obstacles was a chance to reconnect with the craft on a deeper level. Thereโs something satisfying about solving problems and finding ways to keep going, even when conditions arenโt ideal. These challenges are part of the journey, making each finished piece even more rewarding.

Looking Ahead: Projects and Plans
The wood kiln project continues to move forward, one brick at a time. With the foundation laid and the structure starting to take shape, itโs exciting to see this long-term goal come closer to reality. This deliberate pace allows for thoughtful decision-making and ensures each step is built to last.
In the studio, Valentine vases and dinnerware sets are on the horizon. These projects bring a sense of purpose and direction, helping to focus energy and creativity. Planning ahead and embracing the process are essential to keeping the momentum alive as we move into February.
Reflections on Gratitude and Community
January has been a month of growth, both in the studio and beyond. Reflecting on the support from the Creek Road Pottery community fills me with gratitude. Every interaction, every story shared, and every piece created is a testament to the power of connection and creativity.
