Creating in Change

Facing Creative Challenges in the Studio

This past month, working on larger pottery pieces brought new challenges. The clay was hard, heavier, and more demanding than expected. Kneading and preparing the clay took longer, making my shoulders ache. I tried softening the blocks with water and using warm water to improve workability, but throwing the vases remained a test of patience and endurance.

While creative work often pushes us beyond our comfort zones, suffering for art isn’t always necessary. Thereโ€™s a difference between meaningful effort and unnecessary struggle. A good workout leaves you sore but strongerโ€”pushing through discomfort is part of growth. The key is knowing when to press forward and when to take a step back to avoid burnout.

Are We Learning or Hiding?

Iโ€™ve realized I might be spending more time learning than doing. I love consuming books, podcasts, and tutorials on a wide range of topics, but the real question is: How much of that learning is being applied? The ideal balance is learning while doingโ€”practice makes better, after all. But thereโ€™s a fine line between preparing and procrastinating.

Writing about pottery is easier than making it. Iโ€™ve likely written more about pots this year than Iโ€™ve fired in the kiln. While writing has its place, action is what brings real change. Resistance tempts us to keep learning rather than applying knowledge. If weโ€™re not careful, we can drown in a sea of information, never putting our skills to work. Today, I remind myselfโ€”and youโ€”to act, even if imperfectly.

The Writing on the Wall: Seeing and Interpreting Change

Sometimes, the truth is right in front of us, but we hesitate to acknowledge it. We might avoid difficult conversations or seek interpretations that align with our beliefs rather than reality. Whether in business, art, or life, understanding change requires critical thinking and an openness to different perspectives.

As creators, we put our own โ€œwriting on the wall.โ€ Our work invites interpretation, sometimes in ways we never intended. Some will understand our message; others will misinterpret or reject it. The important thing is to ensure clarity in our work and the change we seek to create. Even when faced with criticism or misunderstanding, we keep making.

Time: The Investment We Canโ€™t Get Back

Time is a non-renewable resource. Itโ€™s an investment, not something to be wasted. Once spent, itโ€™s gone. Every moment should be used intentionally, whether for creating, resting, or building something meaningful. We should always ask ourselves: Will todayโ€™s actions lead to a better tomorrow?

Itโ€™s easy to lose time to hesitation, overplanning, or unnecessary distractions. The past canโ€™t be undone, but we can control how we move forward. The key is to let go of sunk costs, focus on the present, and ensure that what we create today builds something worthwhile for the future.

Final Thoughts: Showing Up Despite Resistance

This month has had its share of obstaclesโ€”cold days in the studio, challenging clay, and moments of exhaustion. Some days, resistance wins. Some days, all I can do is show up, even if I donโ€™t accomplish everything I planned. But showing up is still progress.

If youโ€™ve felt stuck or discouraged in your own work, remember that every step forward counts, even the small ones. Push through resistance, embrace the process, and create something that matters. The time we have is short, but we can still make it meaningful.

Until next time, keep creating, keep learning, and keep moving forward.

Best,
