As spring approaches, we at Creek Road Pottery are excited to share our latest updates, insights, and reflections from our creative journey! This month, we wanted to touch on the invaluable lessons learned during our recent challenges and successes in the studio.

Embracing Learning Opportunities
Crafting pottery is a continual journey of discovery. Recently, I experienced a setback when I over-reduced a batch in the kiln, resulting in an entire load of blistered pots. While the initial disappointment was palpable, it led to significant insights about resilience and managing responses to failure. Just as writers face rejection and continue to create, potters must persist through challenges. This practice nurtures our craft and reinforces the deep need to createโnot merely as a hobby or job, but as a true vocation.
The Art of Glazing
A significant part of our craftsmanship happens in the kiln, where the finishing touches truly come to life. Iโve found joy in experimenting with glazes that react uniquely with different textures. With nine years of experience under my belt, I’ve settled into a trio of glazes, focusing on dynamic layering that captivates the eye and engages the narrative. During the Spring Show, I tested various firing techniques, refining my knowledge of reduction and glazing practices. While one load didnโt turn out as expected, a subsequent refiring allowed me to salvage those pieces, a reminder that persistence often leads to unexpected successes.

Show and Share
Our recent Spring Show revealed the beauty of connection through pottery. Visitors engaged with the work, sharing their stories and emotions tied to specific piecesโsome even took home a pot! This interaction reinforces the importance of showing up, regardless of production outcomes. Each pot tells a story, and it’s a privilege to share those narratives with the community.
Reflecting on Progress
As we continue to create, we recognize that the path is paved with trial and error. The essence of our craft lies in the process of makingโlearning with every piece while also evaluating our methods. There truly are no perfect potsโonly good ones, and through each creation, we strive to improve. Remember, it’s perfectly okay to start over. We often face the belief that every piece we create deserves a chance, but just like writing, not every pot needs to be shared. Sometimes, it’s vital to refine and revisit our creations.

Thank You for Your Support!
We appreciate your continued support and passion for pottery. Your enthusiasm inspires us every day. Stay tuned for more updates, insights, and creative showcases!
Happy Potting!
Sincerely,
Alford Wayman
