A Year in Reflection

Lessons from the Studio

This year, the wheel has spun countless times, each turn teaching something new. From the rasped textures developed years ago to the fresh forms imagined during quiet moments, the journey of creation has been one of growth and persistence. Every pot holds a story, and every story begins with showing up. Even on days when the clay feels stiff or inspiration seems distant, the act of starting is what matters most.

Pottery reminds us that failure is not the end but a step in the process. The pots that didnโ€™t make itโ€”whether cracked in the kiln or discarded after trimmingโ€”were still vital in shaping the ones that did. They teach patience, resilience, and the beauty of imperfection. As the year ends, thereโ€™s gratitude for both the successes and the lessons.

The Gift of Creation

The holiday season has always been a time for giving, and this year was no different. Each pot sold, each candle lit, and each story shared felt like a giftโ€”not just from Creek Road Pottery to its customers but also from the community back to the studio. These exchanges are what make creating so meaningful.

Reflecting on ancient traditions, gifts were once deeply symbolic, passed down through generations or won through great effort. Today, each handmade piece serves as a reminder of those values. A mug isnโ€™t just a vessel; itโ€™s an invitation to pause, reflect, and connect. A bowl isnโ€™t just a tool; itโ€™s a centerpiece for shared meals and stories. The goal has always been to create work that matters for people who care.

A Winterโ€™s Work

The cold months bring their own challenges. The studio, though warm enough to work in, echoes with the seasonโ€™s stillness. Each pot made in winter feels like an act of defiance against the frost, a testament to the resilience of creativity. Hot tea and a roaring wood stove help fend off the chill, as does the satisfaction of seeing a new batch of work come together.

This winter, the focus has been on preparing for whatโ€™s ahead. The kiln has fired its last load for the year, and plans for 2025 are already taking shape. From bakeware to plate settings, the new year promises fresh projects and exciting challenges.

Gratitude for the Journey

Every step of this yearโ€™s journey has been accompanied by the support of family, friends, and customers. From snowy visits to the shop to quiet moments with loved ones, these connections have been the true highlight of 2024. Special memories, like playing Christmas songs for my mother or hearing my fatherโ€™s stories at the dinner table, serve as reminders of whatโ€™s truly important.

Through all the ups and downs, the gratitude runs deepโ€”for the opportunity to create, for the lessons learned, and for the community that makes it all worthwhile. This is the work that matters, and itโ€™s all the better for being shared with people who care.

Closing Reflections

As the calendar turns to a new year, thereโ€™s a sense of hope and anticipation. Each pot made, each story told, and each connection built serves as a reminder of why this work is worth doing. Hereโ€™s to another year of creation, connection, and community.

Thank you for being part of this journey. From everyone at Creek Road Pottery, we wish you a Happy New Year filled with creativity, joy, and meaningful moments.

Sincerly, Alford Wayman
